Youth Discipleship and Evangelization
In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus leaves us with the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19), to go and make disciples of all nations. At St James, Youth Discipleship and Evangelization strives to live the parish mission statement: Be disciples of Christ. Make disciples of Christ. We can’t give what we don’t have. We strive to become disciples by:
- Prayer and the Sacraments
Through prayer and the sacraments we come to know Jesus and His Church.
Bible studies and Discipleship Groups help us build authentic friendships where we encourage our peers to bring their faith into their daily lives.
- Serving and Loving Others
In sharing the Gospel, we share Christ by going outside of ourselves to love and serve others.

Encounter Something More
In Matthew’s Gospel (Matt 7:7-8), Jesus tells us, “Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” SEEK is a 5-day event where we have the freedom to ask the big questions.
Discover what it means to live and to love.
Discover true happiness.
Encounter something more.

Catholic Heart Workcamp (CHWC)
St. James has been partnering with Catholic Heart Workcamp for many years! We’ve taken teens to serve various parts of the country and two years ago took a group of teens to serve in St. Thomas. CHWC is comprised of two elements, Service and Program. At these camps, youth are given the opportunities to truly serve the communities by working with local agencies. They feed the hungry, restore homes, accompany the elderly or disabled, lift the spirits of children and much more. The experience doesn’t end there. The program element of CHWC engages teens through testimonies, concerts, dance parties, sports/games, and fun. With a great combination of work, play, and the essentials of mass and prayer and worship, CHWC helps give youth a greater perspective on how to fully live their faith.
What about the Local Mission?
Have no fear, the Local Mission is still happening in July of 2019! Details are still being discussed, but check back for more details to serve our community locally in Chicagoland.
If you are interested in being a chaperone for the CHWC Milwaukee Trip or Local Mission, please contact Christina Hudson (email@example.com). All chaperones must be 21 or older. In compliance with the Archdiocese’s Office for the Protection of Children and Youth, all chaperones must be VIRTUS trained. VIRTUS training is offered throughout the Chicagoland area. Please click here to register for a training that fits your schedule.
Thank you to all the teens and chaperones who made mission season 2018 possible! Our time in Farmington, MI with Catholic Heart and our local mission serving our neighbors in Arlington Heights and Chicago was truly blessed.

Our high school discipleship groups meet weekly and are led by an adult facilitator. In seeking to be Christian disciples, we have the freedom to wrestle with the hard questions, discuss the hot button issues, and ask the “what” and the “why” of Church teachings and Scripture. There is such thing as absolute truth, and as Christians, we encourage and inspire each other to live it out in our daily lives.
What is a Christian Disciple?
A disciple is someone who knows Jesus, strives to follow Him, and desires to share Him with others.
Different discipleship groups meet at different times throughout the week. To get plugged in, sign up here to join.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
This is offered during the 10AM Sunday Mass most Sundays and is a special form of catechesis for our young children grades K-3rd. Children are invited into the chapel during the Liturgy of the Word to hear God’s Word proclaimed out of the Children’s Catholic Bible. The children are lead in a discussion and an activity that gives them the opportunity to reflect on God’s Word and explore how it connects to their lives.
VOLUNTEER for this engaging Ministry! We want teens (this counts for service hours) to help set up the Chapel prior to mass starting and then help guide the children while in the chapel. If you are interested in learning more please call or email. TOTAL VOLUNTEER TIME IS 30min each mass. Please contact Sharon Moeykens at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
