YOUTH MINISTRY

Our mission statement, “Be disciples of Christ. Make Disciples of Christ”, extends to every one of our parishioners, including our teens. Through our LIFETEEN (High School) and EDGE (Middle School) Ministries, we encourage to become disciples in through friendship, serving others, and in building their relationship with Jesus through prayer and the sacraments. FALL 2020 & SRRING 2021 | In Person & Virtual

We have been given our “Reopening Certification” from the Archdiocese and are ready for another year of LIFETEEN. We are opting for the “Modified/In Person Hybrid” Model which allows us the maximum time of face time with the teens, once a month.  Though this is not ideal and is a far cry from the LIFETEEN model we set last year, we will still plan on weekly LIFETEEN virtual gatherings on the weeks we are unable to gather in person.

Though the State of Illinois has “opened up”, we understand every family faces different circumstances at home and for this reason there are varying levels of comfort with regard to activities families choose to do outside of the home. Please continue to do what is best for you and your family.

LIFETEEN NIGHTS

    • In Person Social Nights (Dates below): For the time being, “In Person” nights are only able to happen once a month. These gatherings will be held at St. James and will be a time for teens to come together to socialize and grow in friendship. We will continue to have a short, but engaging talk, have dinner, and pray together, but the premise of the night will be cultivating friendships among the larger group.
      • Teens will be required to wear masks and continue to practice social distancing.
    • Teen Prayer/Confession Nights:  Right now, we have scheduled two of these nights- one during Advent and one during Lent. These nights give teens an opportunity for teens to pray together in Adoration and to offer the chance to go to Confession.
    • Retreat Weekend: While the retreat was a highlight for many of our teens last year, this year’s retreat may look different, but we still want to offer an extended period for the teens to come together to pray and encounter Jesus together for a Retreat Day, instead of a full weekend.
    • Virtual Nights: Virtual Nights will happen on the off weeks from the In Person Nights. Please note, this could change if we are given permission for more in person nights throughout the year. Two of the virtual nights will be small groups getting together. This will be a time for teens to meet with their small groups to dive into scripture, pray together, and provides a forum to learn from the Bible and a place for their questions to help understand their faith and help grow their relationship with Jesus. Virtual nights will be held on dates determined by the small group, based on teen and group leader availability.

REGISTRATION & FEES
All teens attending LIFETEEN MUST register. The registration fee for the year remains the same, $150 ($120 with the Catholic Education Discount Program—see below!); however, those who register for the January 2021-May 2021 semester will have a pro-rated registration of $70. Fees will continue to cover the cost of dinners provided each night, outside speakers, musicians, materials created and used for in person and virtual nights, and additional supplies to upkeep health and safety measures. LIFETEEN Registration can be found here: https://www.stjamesah.org/lifeteen-registration/ We would hate for finances to prevent teens from joining LIFETEEN. If you’d like to learn more about financial assistance for LIFETEEN, please contact Barbara Krawczyk bkrawczyk@stjamesah.org in our Business Office for more details.

Catholic Education Discount Program (From our Director of Evangelization, Jonathan Blevins)
We know that when you registered for Religious Education/Formation with us last year, no one expected a global pandemic.  We lost a few in person classes and while we are confident in the online resources that we offered, we know that nothing beats that in person learning experience. We also understand that this virus has left many people in some uncomfortable financial situations. That is why we are excited to offer you the Catholic Education Discount Program. 15% off per child to help make up for the 15% of classes/sessions that were missed. That means you will receive $30 off per child that you register for Religious Education, Confirmation, and Life Teen. This offer is extended to new families as well. Please note as you register that this is only an option. If you are able, and would like to pay the full price, you are more than welcome to do so.

The topics below were based on reoccurring questions and themes that came up in small group discussions last year. Small group discussions and talks will be based on the topics below. The “In Person” dates for LIFETEEN this year are also listed. Please keep in mind as developments come through regarding COVID -19, these plans may change.

LIFETEEN Retreat Recap 2019

Last year, we had an awesome retreat. It was an epic weekend away at St. Iakovos Retreat Center in Kansasville, WI. Did you already forget? Well, here is the recap video: https://youtu.be/bjszG2OSRGM.

This year, we aren’t able to take our weekend away, but it’ll still be a good time. We will be combining our retreat elements with various elements of the SEEK21. Click HERE to learn more about SEEK21.  Our retreat will be for one day and an opportunity to gather together for engaging talks,  great conversation, prayer, fun and making some new friends and going deeper with old friends.

***With the current pandemic, LIFETEEN will be different this fall. Please see “COVID Update” Tab for the most updated information for the fall.

Join us every Sunday night for LIFETEEN after the 5PM Sunday Mass in the Laramie Room (Church basement)! LIFETEEN Sundays are called Life Nights. Our Life Nights are designed to bring students together through small groups within a large group content. High schoolers will stay in these same small groups for the entire year which will help build and foster friendships with their peers in those groups. Each Life Night night will follow this format:  Gather, Proclaim, Break, Send.

  • GATHER: Bringing teens together for ice breakers, Jimmy Fallon type games, and dinner.
  • PROCLAIM: 8-10 minute talk given by an adult relating some aspect of the faith to the teens and their lives
  • BREAK: 40-50 minute small group time to digest and apply the theme of the night to their lives. This is where teens will have the opportunity to go deeper into the gospel message, dive into scripture with their group, and freely ask questions. These groups stay together for the entire year allowing the students to grow together in Christ centered friendships.
  • SEND: After the Break, the teens will all come back together and will do a form of prayer to close out the night (Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Praise and Worship, Intercessory Prayer etc.) The hope is at the end of a year going to Life Nights, teens will have been introduced to at least 20 different ways to pray and hopefully will connect with one of these ways to pray to personalize their relationship with Jesus.

REGISTRATION & FEES
The fee for high school students is $150 for the year. This will help to cover the cost of dinner, outside speakers, musicians and other resources and materials will use throughout the year.
We would like all teens to register but understand some teens may want to “check it out” first. We would love for your teens to register so we can have up-to-date information, parent contact to keep you updated with the latest and greatest and to keep count of how much food to prepare for per week. If they are hesitant to join but want to join us for a few sessions, they are more than welcome to join us any time!

WHAT IS EDGE?
EDGE is  Middle School Youth Ministry Program here at St. James. The program is designed to bring students together as a large group for fun and games and then break off into small groups. Middle schoolers stay in the same small groups for the entire year which will help build and foster friendships with their peers in those groups. All students grades 6-8 are invited to attend EDGE each weekEach EDGE night will follow this format:  Gather, Proclaim, Break, Send.

  • GATHER: Large group ice breaker and chance for kids to meet (Games, Music, Snacks)
  • PROCLAIM:  a 6-8 minute talk relating their current life to the faith
  • BREAK: Small group time! These small groups will be led by an adult Core Member who will facilitate the discussion to tie in the talk in “Proclaim” to help the students digest and apply it to their lives
  • SEND: At the end of the night we will always close in a different form of prayer each week. The hope is by praying in a large group, students will be able to connect with a way to pray to deepen their relationship with Jesus.
