Deacon Paul Schmidt

Ordained Deacon of the Archdiocese of Chicago 2001

Tell us about yourself:
I’ve lived quite an eventful life. Since having a ‘miracle’ happen while serving as a Marine in the Vietnam War, God has shown his presence to me time and time again during my 79 years. My wife says I should write a book! No one would believe it! Maybe I will when I finally retire. I have spent the past 22 years of my retirement from corporate life, as the business manager at Holy Cross Parish, in Deerfield. Because of Covid and my compromised health history, I’ve had cut back on all my Deacon duties at St. James. But I have years of wonderful memories counseling engaged couples, performing marriages, baptisms, First Communions, leading prayer services, funerals, interments and so much more. It is truly an amazing gift to be of Service to others.

When did you start serving at St. James?
I became involved in a wide variety prayer and service groups right after my wife, Paulette and I moved from Michigan, in 1980. It felt as if we were pretty much involved in everything back then! Going through the men’s early Christ Renews His Parish Weekend really got me involved and helped me build long-lasting friendships.

Why are you passionate about serving at St. James?
I cannot imagine myself being involved anywhere else or doing something other than being of service to my Lord. St. James has always been a vibrant parish, and I am thankful for the opportunity it has given me to lead others to God as an ordained Deacon.
